Tips For Accepting and Embracing Change

Change is all around us. It’s an intractable part of the human condition, and sometimes it seems to be the only constant in our lives. While we can affect change in some ways, we ultimately can’t control it. Grappling with our inability to direct the course of the future isn’t always easy.

At one time or another, we have all struggled to adapt to change. Whether it was about losing a job, the shifting nature of friendships and relationships, the state of the world, or even our own minds, we have to be able to embrace change—positive or negative—in order to move forward.

The key to dealing with change is acceptance. This doesn’t mean giving up and allowing life to direct you as it will; it’s more about coming to terms with the fact that some things are out of your control and learning how to be okay with that.

Grant Me the Serenity

You’re likely familiar with the Serenity prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change …” and so on. And whether or not you subscribe to faith, there’s truth to the sentiment. Change may leave you feeling uncertain, but it may also lead to an opportunity. The ability to accept change can be a mighty and freeing thing.

Unpack Your Past

If you carry the weight of your past with you, it’s time to let go. This doesn’t mean forgetting your stresses, burdens, and traumas, because you often can’t, nor should you. What it does mean is addressing these stressors in a healthy, productive way that will allow you to move forward. You may still feel their impact, but they shouldn’t incapacitate you. Feel your pain, grieve your losses, and learn to forge ahead.

Learn to Cope

It’s all about learning to cope. Different methods work for different people, so it’s important to figure out what strategies work for you. Talking to a therapist or your loved ones can help hash out your feelings. Plus, it can be fun and relaxing. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. Maybe your coping strategy is journaling, meditating, exercising, or having a creative outlet. Whatever keeps you level-headed in the face of stress will help you more easily accept change.

The Power of Positivity

While change can sometimes seem scary and intimidating, it can also mean the start of something new and beautiful. A closed-door may mean an open window. Change can fundamentally shape our personal growth, whether it manifests itself as resiliency through hardship, a chance to reflect, or the beginning of a new chapter. And while there’s not always a positive outcome for every situation, the ability to see change as a potential for growth will help you accept it more openly.

A Brave New World

Letting go of the past, accepting the present, and welcoming the future can change the trajectory of our lives. It’s a powerful tool if you learn how to harness it.
